My third visit to this beautiful Styrian limestone mountain ridge. Unfortunately due to the bad weather we had to cut it short.
The idea was to explore the southern part of the massif dominated by the peaks of Karlhochkogel and Fölzkogel on the first day, hike the central part of Hochschwab massif on the second day, descend to Bodenbauer and get back to the southern part of the mountains (the Festlbeilstein - Käfereck - Mühlbachkogel) on the third day and hike back to the parking on the fourth.
But we started off pretty late on Friday (2pm) and the hike from Karlbach valley to the Brennsattel on the southern ridge was really demanding (1,4 km / cca 560 elevation meters). Other than that - while there's no marked hiking trail - the path is well trodden and easy to follow (there're even some makeshift ladders and rails upon the exposed parts).
The main ridge and plateau is simply breathtaking and no less beautiful than the central Hochschwab massif (and of course significantly less frequented). Originally we planned to sleep at Fölzalm chalet but were unable to reach it so stayed on the plateau just beneath Fölzkogel.
On Saturday the weather had turned turned for the worse and we were forced to cut the hike short and stay at Schiestlhaus for a night.
On Sunday it was raining constantly from the early morning, the temperature dropped significantly and there was a zero visibility. So we decided to get back to the valley and head for home.
However I definitely plan to return to Hochschwab next year.
