Sphinx rocks was also another feature worthy of visiting and provided excellent views of Hobart and surrounds from a perspective quite different to Mt Wellington. The Zig Zag track can be followed from here up to the summit of Mt Wellington and provides exceptional views of the mountains terrain and the organ pipes in particular. This feature would provide great trad climbing for those so inclined.
Unfortunately the day I visited Mt Wellington there was no views. The walk up the zig zag track was well protected from the prevailing inclement weather that only became fully apparent upon reaching the summit. Visibility was down to around 10 m up top and walking was difficult due to the strength of the wind. Upon later checking of the BOM I found out the wind was gusting up to 100 km /hour at this time with creating an apparent temperature of -10 degrees. Needless to say that after half an hours rest and some food in the protection of a hut on the summit I was ready to head back and wind some warmth.
I chose to head back the same way I came due to how protected this route was from the poor weather. I chose a slightly different route from junction cabin opting and followed a 4wd track back to Hobart Rivulet in order to find warmth quicker. Overall a nice full day trip for most but definately better to leave for a sunny winters day!
