Subida al pico Chamizo por la cueva del Chamizo en recorrido circular (with English version)

Para senderistas, califico esta ruta como “difícil” dado que exige realizar algunas trepadas y tiene pasos muy expuestos y aéreos. Para escaladores acostumbrando a escalar terrenos muy abruptos, la ruta no representa dificultad alguna.

Dejamos el vehículo a mitad del carril que conecta la población malagueña de Villanueva del Rosario con el paraje “Alto del Hondonero”, en un llano que hace las veces de aparcamiento. Tomamos un agradable sedero que va atravesando un bosque de pinos en subida, paralelo al carril que conduce al Alto del Hondonero. Llegamos a las inmediaciones de este paraje, a los pies del pico Chamizo y continuamos por el sendero que representa la ruta habitual para subir a este pico. Un poco más adelante, dejamos el marcado sendero para tomar unas trazas paralelas a una valla que recorren los tajos del Chamizo, a media ladera, por unos andenes fácilmente transitables. Estamos en una balconada con fabulosas vistas a todo el valle.
Cuando llegamos a la vertical de donde se encuentra la cueva del Chamizo, unos hitos de piedra son la indicación de que debemos dejar la cómoda traza para iniciar la trepada. Esta no requiere el uso de cuerdas, pero es bastante vertical y en algún que otro punto exigirá ayudarse de las manos. Es aconsejable llevar casco para evitar que alguna piedra pueda golpearnos la cabeza. Tiene un paso que es un poco complicado pues es bastante aéreo, pero con calma y afianzando bien los agarres, se sortea bien, siempre que se tenga experiencia en este tipo de terrenos tan abruptos y verticales.
La cueva es más bien una sucesión de grandes abrigos. Gran parte de sus techos están instalados con cintas express para practicar la escalada deportiva con vías de alto grado. Una vez recorridos todos sus recovecos, continuamos hacia el pico. Para ello, unos hitos de piedra nos van marcando el recorrido buscando la manera más cómoda para sortear los tajos que se alzan sobre nosotros, hasta el punto de no requerir usar las manos. En breve, salimos a la arista del Chamizo, con vistas a la cara sur. Esta es la parte más expuesta y aérea, aunque apenas ofrece más dificultad técnica que algún que otro paso o destrepe en el que habrá que extremar las precauciones.
El Chamizo, con sus 1642 m, el punto más alto de la sierra del Jobo, nos ofrece unas vistas panorámicas absolutamente espectaculares. Los picos nevados de Sierra Nevada parece que estuvieran al alcance de la mano. Una vez disfrutada la cumbre, nos disponemos a iniciar el regreso, para lo cual vamos a llevar a cabo un recorrido circular. A tales efectos, continuamos por la arista, siguiendo los hitos que se dirigen al itinerario de bajada. Una vez descendidos unos metros, dejamos este itinerario y seguimos otros hitos que, en subida, buscan un paso en la cordal. Pasamos a la otra cara, descendemos un poco y afrontamos la subida por una canal cuya verticalidad impresiona bastante. Esta subida requiere trepar las rocas utilizando las manos y es el punto más peligroso de toda la ruta. Así que habrá que extremar la precaución y afianzar los apoyos. Una vez sorteada la canal, esto nos permite subir a otro promontorio que cuenta igualmente con fabulosas vistas. Descendemos este promontorio y afrontamos un tramo prácticamente campo a través hasta cruzarnos con el sendero balizado de la Gran Senda de Málaga, en la etapa que viene desde Alfarnate. Seguimos este sendero pero lo dejamos pronto para tomar otro menos marcado a la derecha que rodea el Alto del Hondonero siguiendo una valla. En este punto, nosotros cometimos el error de permanecer a la derecha de la valla, lo cual nos obligó a afrontar un tramo bastante cubierto de vegetación un poco más adelante. Lo mejor es cruzar la valla cuanto antes, por una zona en la que esta está prácticamente vencida y tomar la senda que va paralela a la valla pero dejando esta a su derecha.
A partir de este punto, progresivamente vamos a ir combinando senderos, carriles y trazas más o menos marcadas que van internándose en la espesura del denso bosque que crece en toda esta zona, rodeando el cerro Durán y el peñón de los Becerros, hasta llegar al punto de inicio. Toda esta parte es un cómodo paseo de gran disfrute.

Ascalt to the Chamizo peak through the Chamizo cave in a circular route (with English version)

For hikers, I classify this route as "difficult" since it requires some climbs and has very exposed and aerial steps. For climbers accustomed to climbing very steep terrain, the route does not represent any difficulty.

We left the vehicle in the middle of the lane that connects the Malaga town of Villanueva del Rosario with the "Alto del Hondonero" place, on a plain that serves as a parking lot. We take a pleasant sedero that is crossing a pine forest uphill, parallel to the lane that leads to the Alto del Hondonero. We arrive in the vicinity of this place, at the foot of the Chamizo peak and continue along the path that represents the usual route to climb this peak. A little further on, we leave the marked path to take some tracks parallel to a fence that runs through the Chamizo valleys, halfway down the hillside, along easily passable platforms. We are on a balcony with fabulous views of the entire valley.

When we reach the vertical of where the Chamizo cave is located, some stone milestones are the indication that we must leave the comfortable trace to start the climb. This does not require the use of ropes, but it is quite vertical and at some point it will require the help of your hands. It is advisable to wear a helmet to prevent any stone from hitting our heads. It has a step that is a little complicated because it is quite aerial, but calmly and strengthening the grips well, it is well circumvented, as long as you have experience in this type of terrain so steep and vertical.

The cave is rather a succession of large shelters. Much of its roofs are installed with express belts to practice sport climbing with high-grade tracks. Once we have traveled all its nooks and crannies, we continue towards the peak. To do this, some stone landmarks are marking the route looking for the most comfortable way to avoid the cuts that stand above us, to the point of not requiring to use your hands. Soon, we will go to the edge of the Chamizo, overlooking the south face. This is the most exposed and aerial part, although it hardly offers more technical difficulty than some steps or destrepe in which extreme precautions will have to be taken.

El Chamizo, with its 1642 m, the highest point of the Jobo mountain range, offers us absolutely spectacular panoramic views. The snowy peaks of Sierra Nevada seem to be within reach. Once the summit has been enjoyed, we are about to start the return, for which we are going to carry out a circular tour. For this purpose, we continue along the edge, following the milestones that are directed to the descent itinerary. Once down a few meters, we leave this itinerary and follow other landmarks that, uphill, look for a step in the cordal. We go to the other side, go down a little and face the climb through a channel whose verticality is quite impressive. This climb requires climbing the rocks using your hands and is the most dangerous point of the entire route. So we will have to exercise extreme caution and strengthen the support. Once the channel has been circumvented, this allows us to go up to another promontory that also has fabulous views. We descend this promontory and face a practically cross-country section until we cross the marked path of the Great Path of Malaga, in the stage that comes from Alfarnate. We follow this path but we leave it soon to take another one less marked on the right that surrounds the Alto del Hondonero following a fence. At this point, we made the mistake of staying to the right of the fence, which forced us to face a section quite covered with vegetation a little later. The best thing is to cross the fence as soon as possible, through an area where it is practically defeated and take the path that goes parallel to the fence but leaving it on your right.

From this point, we will progressively combine paths, lanes and more or less marked traces that are entering the thicket of the dense forest that grows throughout this area, surrounding the Durán hill and the rock of the Calves, until we reach the starting point. This whole part is a comfortable walk of great pleasure.
